Privacy Policy

Manga Translator Z ("the Extension") is a browser extension that translates manga, manhwa, and manhua images using AI. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and how different backend modes affect your privacy.

How Backend Mode Affects Your Data

Hosted Server Mode

When you use the hosted translation server (the default), the following data is sent to our server for processing:

Your anonymous extension ID (UUID), used to track Basic-plan usage quota
Image data from manga pages you request to translate
Your selected source and target languages

Image data is processed in memory for translation and is not stored permanently on our servers. Translated results are returned to your browser and discarded server-side after delivery.

Page counts are tracked to enforce plan quotas: Basic (200 pages/week), Day Pass (100 pages/24h), Starter (1,500 pages/month), Power (3,000 pages/month). The counter is keyed to your anonymous extension ID, or, if you create an optional account to raise your quota, to the email address you provided.

Local Server Mode

When you connect the Extension to a local server running on your own machine, all image data and translation processing stays entirely on your device. No data is sent to our servers.

Ollama Mode

When using the Ollama backend, images are sent to the Ollama instance running at the URL you configure (typically on your local machine). No data is sent to our servers. Your data handling is governed by your own Ollama setup.

OpenAI BYOK Mode

When using OpenAI with your own API key, images are sent directly to the OpenAI API using your key. No data passes through our servers. Your data handling is governed by OpenAI's privacy policy.

What Stays On Your Device (never sent to us)

Translation history. The extension caches the source URL, recognized text, and translation of every page you translate in chrome.storage.local so you can reopen it from the History tab. This data never leaves your browser.
Extension ID. An anonymous UUID generated on first run, used only to track your hosted-tier quota.
Your settings. Font choice, target language, backend selection, OpenAI key (if you use BYOK), glossary, etc.

What We Do Not Collect

No name, address, or phone number
No general browsing history - only the URLs of pages you explicitly translated, and only in your own browser
No tracking cookies or advertising identifiers from the Extension
No analytics or telemetry from the Extension beyond the anonymous extension-ID page counter in hosted mode

Note: This marketing website (mangatranslator.site) uses Google Analytics 4 to understand traffic patterns. The Extension itself does not. You can block GA4 via any standard tracker blocker.

What We Do Collect (optional)

Email address, only if you create an optional account to raise your quota beyond the Basic 200/week tier. The email is used to sign you in via magic link and to tie Stripe subscription entitlements to your account. You can use the extension indefinitely without ever creating an account.
Payment information - processed entirely by Stripe when you buy Day Pass, Starter, or Power. We never see or store your card details.

Data Storage and Security

All locally stored data (extension ID, image hashes, settings) resides in Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.local API, which is sandboxed to the Extension and not accessible by websites or other extensions.

Communication with the hosted server is encrypted via HTTPS. Image data transmitted for translation is processed in memory and not written to persistent storage on our servers.

Data Retention

Local data persists until you uninstall the Extension or clear its storage manually.
Server-side usage counters reset weekly and are purged after 90 days of inactivity.
Image data is never retained server-side beyond the duration of a single translation request.

Third-Party Services

Depending on the backend mode you choose, your data may be processed by:

Our hosted server (hosted mode) - operated by the Manga Translator Z team
OpenAI (BYOK mode) - subject to OpenAI's own privacy policy
Your local machine (local server / Ollama mode) - no third parties involved

The Extension does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.

Your Rights

You can switch to a local-only backend at any time to ensure no data leaves your device.
You can uninstall the Extension to remove all locally stored data.
If you created an optional account, email support@peakproductivity.online to request export or deletion of the email/subscription record tied to that account.

Children's Privacy

The Extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly allow anyone under 13 to create a paid account.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes in the Extension's functionality. Material changes will be communicated through the extension update notes. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly.
