Manga Translator Z

Privacy Policy

Effective date: April 4, 2026

Manga Translator Z ("the Extension") is a Chrome extension that translates manga, manhwa, and manhua images using AI. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and how different backend modes affect your privacy.

Data We Collect

Summary

Data Purpose Stored Where
Anonymous install ID (UUID) Identify installations for quota tracking Locally via chrome.storage; sent to hosted server only
Image hashes (SHA-256) Deduplication to avoid re-translating identical images Locally via chrome.storage
User settings and preferences Persist your configuration choices Locally via chrome.storage
Weekly page count Enforce free-tier quota (hosted mode only) Server-side, keyed to anonymous install ID

How Backend Mode Affects Your Data

Hosted Server Mode

When you use the hosted translation server (the default), the following data is sent to our server for processing:

Image data is processed in memory for translation and is not stored permanently on our servers. Translated results are returned to your browser and discarded server-side after delivery.

Weekly page count is tracked anonymously to enforce the free-tier limit of 40 hosted pages per week. This counter resets weekly and is associated only with your anonymous install ID, not with any personal information.

Local Server Mode

When you connect the Extension to a local server running on your own machine, all image data and translation processing stays entirely on your device. No data is sent to our servers.

Ollama Mode

When using the Ollama backend, images are sent to the Ollama instance running at the URL you configure (typically on your local machine). No data is sent to our servers. Your data handling is governed by your own Ollama setup.

OpenAI BYOK Mode

When using OpenAI with your own API key, images are sent directly to the OpenAI API using your key. No data passes through our servers. Your data handling is governed by OpenAI's privacy policy.

What We Do Not Collect

Data Storage and Security

All locally stored data (install ID, image hashes, settings) resides in Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.local API, which is sandboxed to the Extension and not accessible by websites or other extensions.

Communication with the hosted server is encrypted via HTTPS. Image data transmitted for translation is processed in memory and not written to persistent storage on our servers.

Data Retention

Third-Party Services

Depending on the backend mode you choose, your data may be processed by:

The Extension does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes in the Extension's functionality. Material changes will be communicated through the Extension's update notes on the Chrome Web Store. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly.
