How Manga Translator Z works on MangaDex

Install the extension, open any chapter on mangadex.org, and press T. Speech bubbles get detected by the bundled ONNX YOLO model, the original Japanese / Korean / Chinese text is read by GPT-5.4-mini vision, and translations render directly inside each bubble in a manga font (Komika Hand by default). Original art stays underneath — hover any bubble to flash the source language back.

Long-strip vertical scroll mode (default for webtoons) plus traditional paginated mode for manga. Reader root: /chapter/<id>. Images served from Cloudflare-fronted MD@Home network.

What works on MangaDex

• Both vertical and paginated readers — MTZ's overlay canvas re-aligns when you flip pages or switch reading direction
• Filter the chapter list by language and pick Japanese / Korean / Chinese sources for raw reading
• Hover any translated bubble to see the original Japanese — no second click needed
• Auto-translate mode triggers as soon as the chapter loads, with prefetch for the next 1-3 chapters in the background

Quirks & what to watch for

• If a chapter uses MD@Home rotation and the image hash changes mid-session, MTZ re-runs detection on the new image — translation latency for that page jumps from 0 (cache hit) to 1-2 s (fresh GPT call)
• MangaDex's settings page lets you pin reading direction; MTZ honors per-site rules so you can override target language only on mangadex.org
• A handful of chapters are scrambled by uploaders to deter scraping — MTZ's YOLO bubble detector still works because it operates on the visible DOM image, not the source URL
