How to study Japanese with manga

Raw manga is the dream input for a Japanese learner, real language, endless supply, instant context. The catch is the kanji you have not learned yet. Here is how to read it anyway, and turn each chapter into practice.

See it in action

Live, right on the page

Study mode adds the reading over every kanji and reads the line aloud. Tap play to hear it.

The method

  1. Open any manga page and press T. Bubbles are translated in place so you always have a safety net.
  2. Turn on Study mode in the popup. Now hovering a bubble shows the original Japanese with furigana over every kanji, so you can read words you have never seen.
  3. Press the speaker to hear a native voice read the line. The kanji highlight in time, shadow it out loud to train pronunciation and rhythm.
  4. Only peek at the English when you are stuck. The goal is to read the Japanese first.

What to read first

slice-of-life (やさしい日本語)sports mangashounen with simple dialogue4-koma comedyromance / school life

Start with everyday settings, school, family, friends, where the vocabulary repeats and the sentences are short. Save dense fantasy or historical series (heavy on rare kanji and invented terms) for later.

Tips that make it stick

FAQ

Do I need to know kanji to study Japanese with manga?

No. Study mode puts furigana (the hiragana reading) over every kanji, so you can read and learn words before you have memorized their characters.

Is it free?

Yes, the Basic plan includes 200 translations per week at no cost. Voice playback and Study mode are part of the Pro feature set.

Does the voice help with pronunciation?

Yes. A native voice reads each line while the kanji highlight in time, which is ideal for shadowing, repeating aloud right after the voice.
